The Rt. Hon. Quim Torra, 131st president of Catalonia, announced last Wednesday 29th January that he would put an end to the current legislature and call an election as soon as the budget has been passed by the Catalan Parliament in the coming months.
Although the election date cannot yet be given, this announcement confirms the intense division there is in the current pro-independentist government made up of the Republican followers of Oriol Junqueras (ERC) and the coalition led by Carles Puigdemont (Junts per Catalunya). It was this latter group that unexpectedly pipped ERC at the post thus gaining the all-important right to appoint the candidate to the Presidency after the December 21st 2017 election.
